Managing Counsel, Product (Payroll experience required)

About the role

This individual‑contributor legal leadership position supports the development of complex HR‑technology products across global markets. Based in Bulgaria, the Managing Counsel works closely with Product, Payroll, Engineering, Privacy, Security and Commercial teams to translate legal requirements from more than 90 jurisdictions into practical product guidance.

Key responsibilities

• Provide end‑to‑end legal counsel for payroll and AI‑enabled products, including launch‑readiness and AI impact assessments.
• Partner with product, engineering and other cross‑functional teams to embed legal considerations throughout the product lifecycle.
• Draft and negotiate product terms, AI‑specific contractual provisions and data‑usage clauses.
• Monitor emerging AI, employment, data‑protection and payroll regulations worldwide and convert them into actionable product requirements.
• Support compliance with frameworks such as the EU AI Act, GDPR, CCPA and related national legislation.
• Collaborate with Privacy and Security on DPIAs, incident response and vendor assessments for AI/LLM providers.
• Manage external counsel on multi‑jurisdictional matters, ensuring commercially focused advice.
• Deliver legal enablement through training sessions, office hours and practical guidance for internal stakeholders.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with substantial experience advising on technology products across multiple jurisdictions.
• Proven product counsel experience in the technology sector, preferably with strong expertise in HR‑technology, payroll, PEO, EOR or HRIS.
• Demonstrated ability to balance legal risk with commercial objectives and product innovation.

Required skills

• Deep knowledge of employment law, data‑protection regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) and emerging AI legislation.
• Experience conducting AI impact assessments, model card creation and governance framework design.
• Strong ability to translate complex legal requirements into clear, actionable product guidance.
