Medical Microbiologist (Physician)

About the role

SMDL “Kandilarov”, a growing private medical diagnostic laboratory in Bulgaria, is seeking a Medical Microbiologist (Physician) to join its clinical microbiology team. The role involves performing and supervising microbiological analyses that directly influence patient care decisions.

Key responsibilities

• Perform and/or supervise microbiological diagnosis of clinical specimens.
• Assess specimen suitability, transport, storage and processing requirements.
• Conduct culture, isolation and identification of microorganisms.
• Carry out antimicrobial susceptibility testing and interpret results.
• Validate, interpret and release laboratory results within professional competence.
• Provide clinical consultation to referring physicians when needed.
• Ensure compliance with SOPs, biosafety and infection‑control standards.
• Participate in internal quality control, external quality assessment and non‑conformity investigations.
• Work with the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to guarantee data traceability and confidentiality.
• Support implementation, verification and validation of new methods and equipment.
• For fully qualified physicians, coordinate laboratory technicians and support their development.

Required profile

• Medical degree with completed specialty or ongoing training in Medical Microbiology.
• Professional experience in a microbiology laboratory (preferred for trainees).
• Knowledge of Medical Standard for Clinical Microbiology and biosafety requirements.
• Proficiency in English.
• Strong analytical, organizational and communication abilities.
• High precision, responsibility and teamwork orientation.
