Staff Engineer – Python & Data Platform

About the role

Man Group is seeking a Staff Python Engineer to provide technical leadership across its technology organisation. The role focuses on systematic trading, quantitative research, petabyte‑scale data platforms and AI solutions, offering significant autonomy and hands‑on design work.

Key responsibilities

• Own architectural direction for critical systems, making build‑vs‑buy and long‑term design decisions across multiple teams.
• Design and build scalable backend services, APIs and distributed compute applications with a focus on performance, resilience and observability.
• Develop high‑performance data pipelines for petabyte‑scale financial datasets using timeseries, SQL and NoSQL technologies.
• Act as a technical escalation point, translating ambiguous requirements into coherent technical strategy.
• Lead engineering craft by setting standards for testing, code review and production readiness, mentoring engineers at all levels.

Required profile

• 8+ years of professional software development experience with deep expertise in Python.
• Proven track record of owning architecture and technical direction for production systems at scale.
• Strong academic background in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or Physics.
• Experience influencing technical direction without formal authority and aligning cross‑team stakeholders.
